iGaming glossary for editors: terms without mistakes
My working reference: how to write key casino and betting terms consistently, correctly and clearly for beginners.
Casino and slots
| Term | Write | Avoid | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTP | RTP of 96.5% | Rtp, R.T.P., 96,5 % | Theoretical return over the long run |
| Volatility | high volatility | mixing with “variance” in one text | How big and how rare wins are |
| Free spins | free spins | freespins, free-spins, FS | Spins without deducting a stake |
| Wagering | 35x wagering | wager 35, x35 WR | How many times a bonus must be played through |
| Cashback | cashback | cash back, cash-back | A refund of part of the losses |
| Jackpot | progressive jackpot | Jackpot mid-sentence | An accumulating top prize |
| Live casino | live casino | Live Casino mid-sentence | Games with a real dealer |
| Bonus buy | bonus buy feature | bonusbuy | Paying to enter the bonus round |
Note the x in wagering: “35x” means “35 times”. Pick one order (35x or x35) for the whole project and never mix them.
Betting
| Term | Write | Avoid | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odds | odds of 1.85 | mixing decimal and fractional | Choose the format your market uses |
| Accumulator | accumulator (acca) / parlay | both in one text | “Acca” for the UK, “parlay” for the US |
| Free bet | free bet | freebet, free-bet | A free stake from the bookmaker |
| Over/Under | over 2.5 goals | O2.5 without explanation | Spell it out on first mention |
| Handicap | −1.5 handicap | -1.5 (hyphen instead of minus) | Use the real minus sign “−” |
| Cash Out | Cash Out (feature), cash out (verb) | cashout, cash-out mixed | Settling a bet early |
| Margin | bookmaker margin of 5% | “juice” in formal copy | The commission built into the odds |
